Ken’s method is simple “let the dog be a dog”. Your dog is welcome to take her time to get familiar with the strange new surroundings of a studio. There is no hurry and Ken is very, very patient. There are few demands placed on the dog during our session. The area is kept as calm and as quiet as possible, creating a relaxed environment and therefore a relaxed dog. If needed, we may break out into play mode to keep the dog engaged and interested. If the dog wants to leave the set to explore, that’s fine. We can get her back when she is ready. Sometimes too much stimulation from too many sources can be distracting and confusing for the dog, so I may ask to be alone with the dog for awhile.
Sessions are kept relatively short, 45~60 minutes or so with several breaks. Any longer and the dog may become agitated, nervous or just stop responding. Location portrait sessions may last longer as we will be interacting in a very different and dynamic way. Family members are welcome to sit in the portrait too!
All shapes and sizes
and so much personality. From serious to hilarious, from curious to shy, Ken’s easy going approach to dog portraits can bring out the personality of
any dog.

Tips for a successful K9 Portrait session
•Exercise your dog for at least 45 minutes to an hour prior to the portrait session. This is the most important tip I can give. 30 minutes of brisk walking for little dogs, and one hour for big dogs should be about right. This will help reduce any pent up energy and allow the dog to focus on posing.
•Bring your dog’s favourite treats or toys for motivation.
•I would ask that only one person be present with the dog during the shoot. It can be very distracting if more than one person is giving commands to the dog.
•Be calm, dogs will pick up on your energy. If you’re nervous or anxious your dog will be too. I may ask that you step out of the room, some dogs respond to me better when the owner isn’t there.
•Be patient, we will get “the” shot. The pace of the shoot is set by the dog.
•I have no expectations of your dog, other than he be a dog.
•Don’t worry, if he has an accident, we have cleaning supplies.
•Another big one here... Remember, this is fun!
